Medical waste is not accepted at Wild Cat Solid Waste District.
Sharps, needles, syringes, and lancets should be put in a heavy plastic container and labeled “Sharps Do Not Recycle”. Plastic laundry detergent bottles work best for this. Once the container is full or ready for disposal, duct tape the lid on tight and set out for the regular trash. The main goal of this is to prevent the container from going into the recycling waste stream. Recyclables get hand sorted and there would be the potential for a worker to get stuck by a needle.
There are companies who will mail you a sharps container and when it is full you can mail it back. This option tends to be costly and requires more handling of the sharps. If you would like more information on vendors call Wild Cat Solid Waste District at (765) 659-4257.
Other medical waste such as used bandages, catheters, and gloves should be double bagged and set out for regular trash.
